Simplifying airspace and NOTAMs
Glider pilots are required to prepare their flights just like all other recreational, commercial and military pilots. The meteorological situations and navigational aspects should be studied carefully, the glider checked meticulously and all required documents must be verified. On top of that, the rules applicable to the flight must be read and understood. These operational rules come in two forms: the general regulations as published in the Aeronautical Information Publications (AIP) and the daily regulations as published in the Notices to Airmen (NOTAMs). These rules tell the pilot where he or she is allowed to fly, which threats are to be expected, and what requirements are to be adhered to in each particular airspace. The challenge for the pilot, in a three dimensional environment with invisible restrictions, is to visualize these restrictions, threats and requirements in a comprehensive way. GPS AeroData aims to be a helpful tool for the pilot to read, understand, filter, organize and visualize all this required information.
What is GPS AeroData?
GPS AeroData is a database that contains airspace, NOTAMs, and customized information. The database is generated and refreshed each day between 03:00 and 20:00 UTC with a 15 minute interval for the European countries listed here. The database can be used in flight computers, handheld navigation devices and flight planning software compatible with the CUB-format. The source for the data is European AIS Database (EAD) maintained by Eurocontrol. EAD is a centralized reference database of quality-assured aeronautical information and lets aeronautical information providers – such as civil AIS organisations, air navigation service providers and military administrations in the European Civil Aviation Conference (ECAC) area – enter and maintain their data in a central repository. Special arrangements or procedures not listed in AIPs are added to the data, then all the data for GPS AeroData are filtered and formatted for use by subscribed pilots.
